Getting started
A warm welcome to the CellNetworks community! You have the privilege, and the benefit, of working in an unique environment. Not only is Heidelberg considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Germany – the picturesque ensemble of castle, Old Town and river nestled in the hills of the Odenwald. Heidelberg is also where future is shaped. The Ruperto Carola has been distinguished as a German elite university and is one of the leading universities in the world. However exciting a new start may be, the first steps in an unfamiliar environment are always the hardest. This is why we have compiled some useful information. Besides, remember that our staff is ready to assist you at any time.

Preparation stage - before coming to Heidelberg

To ease the settling for you, we prepared a short checklist with the most important things to do before and after arrival.


Before leaving Home As soon as you arrive
- Decide when you are going to start work and discuss the date with your (host) institute well in advance. - Sign your lease agreement.
- Put together the most important documents (passport, visa, confirmation for health insurance coverage, letter of invitation from the university or fellowship award letter, up to two biometric passport photos, certified copies of your doctoral certificate or any other academic degrees). - Register (yourself and your family) at the local Residents’ Registration Office if your stay is longer than 90 days (Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt).
- Apply for your visa (and those of any members of your family accompanying you). - Open a bank account.
- Arrange health insurance coverage (for yourself, your marital partner and children). - Sign your employment contract if applicable; to be able to do this you will have to apply for a certificate of good conduct (Führungszeugnis) at the Residents’ Registration Office.
- Organize your taxes. Please always refer to your local contact person for detailed information!
- Find out about the accommodations in your new place of residence and begin as early as possible to search for housing that suits your needs.

- Gather information on financial assistance for families  
- - Register online with the Heidelberg University Welcome Centre Before you leave, sign in with Heidelberg Alumni International to stay in contact with Heidelberg University and your prefereed group!
